When the author asked me to create a cover for this book, I drew inspiration from the comparison of one’s life to a building. The work that a person does and their potential for growth and success must be built on a solid foundation of strong character and good habits. Just as a building cannot stand without a solid foundation, so a person cannot ultimately succeed without strong character and morality. Each of the ten chapters in this book deals with a particular aspect of a leader's inner life and character. I decided to represent each chapter as a “brick” in a foundation. I placed a single brick on the cover—playing off the word “simple” in the title—and on the first page of each chapter I added a brick until I got to a completed “foundation” in chapter ten.
